Our Work in Schools
Weekly small-group workshops that combine singing, signing, mindfulness, music and animal-assisted therapy — tailored to the needs of each group.
Supporting mental health in schools
We work in primary and secondary schools across Staffordshire and the West Midlands, delivering weekly small-group sessions that address anxiety, low self-esteem, social difficulties and more. Our volunteers are trained and supported, and we begin delivery within two full school terms of initial contact.
£200 per half term
A donation from the school, covering 5–7 weekly sessions of approximately one hour each. All roles — including delivery — are unpaid.
What we deliver
Every session draws on some or all of these four approaches, shaped around what the group needs.
Singing & Signing
Using Makaton and British Sign Language, sessions build social bonds, exercise cognitive function, and develop confidence and a new skill. Singing together is one of the most effective ways to create trust and a sense of belonging in a group.
Mindfulness
Sensory, artistic, breathing and outdoor activities that teach young people to pause, regulate and self-manage. Activities include:
- Sensory activities
- Art and creative activities
- Breathing exercises
- Outdoor activities
Music
Music is used for relaxation, body scans and mindfulness anchoring. We have worked with composer John Hicks on original pieces — including URREY (Unwind, Rest, Relax, Empty yourself) and Winding Down — and collaborated with Kingsmead School Year 7 students on original songwriting.
Animal Assisted Therapy
Sensory-based sessions in partnership with The Monty Project. Animal interactions can unlock emotional responses and a sense of calm in young people who find more traditional approaches difficult.
Year 6 to Year 7 Transition Programme
Moving from primary to secondary school is one of the most significant transitions a young person faces. Our transition programme follows pupils from Year 6 into their new secondary school setting in the autumn term, providing continuity of support through a challenging period.
